modify package size based on attribute?

I sell framed and unframed items and for unframed items I can allow the purchaser to select a USPS "small" package and ship at a lower rate.

If the purchaser elects to have their item framed I would like to have a way to disallow the small package selection since I'll have to use a larger box.

Is there a way I can do this based on an attribute (IE, selection of a frame) or do I just need to fake out the system by making the frame "heavy" enough that it costs the purchaser more?

What's the "right" way to handle selections that result in a larger shipping container for the same "item"?

At this time you will have to rely on a weight differential.

I'm not confident that will take care of the problem without making the weights obscenely large. I tried adding an extra half-pound and the USPS rates didn't change.
I think what I really want to do is get rid of the "small package" rates when a purchaser selects specific attributes.
For example, when framed, non of my products can ship via "United States Postal Service (1 x 2.36lbs) (Global Priority Mail - Flat-rate Envelope (Small) (4 - 6 days))" which still gets displayed in the shipping estimator.
