Shipping rate per product type

Has anyone successfully built a shipping module which caters for different shipping rates for separate product types?

Example:
Product type A (which is very heavy) has one table rate whereas product type B (being much lighter) has another, different table rate.

Any advice or help appreciated.

This would require quite a bit of customization ...

You can however, utilize the Per Unit perweightunit shipping modules and clone it for various zones and alter the Unit rate based on the products_weight * unit * quantity to get unique shipping per product per zone ...
