Can Media Mail be OPTIONAL per product?

Well, I've seen a few posts about this, but none that I could find had the answer... they all sorta left ya hangin' .

My site, like many others, has some books and some non-media related items. How can I have it show the media option if ONLY books are in the checkout cart?

Please tell me there is a add-on somewhere for this .

You would need to have some kind of flag or indicator that the product(s) are all books in the shopping cart ... then test for this to see if that is the only kind of product in the shopping cart ...

Is there something in your products table that distinquishes books from other products?

No, nothing to distinguish them. Wouldn't even know how to do that to be honest....other then the catagory they are placed in.

I was thisclose to taking it all live tonight :-( then someone noticed in testing that Media shows up all the time.

You can always have a new flag or field added to the products table such as products_is_media

Then test if all products in the cart have this set on or off ...

Then customize the shipping module to show/not show the Media based on the results ...

It does take some custom work to add the field, add the access in the Admin, add the test, customize the shipping module ... but it can be done ...

I would have to sit down and write the customized code for all of this to tell you ...

If you are not a programmer ... you may wish to advertise for one in the Commercial Help Wanted as this is not necessarily a simple thing to do ...

[FONT=Arial]My first customer purchased 7 items (3 of which were books and or CDs and the rest were teaching materials for the classroom) She chose media mail shipping for all items. I looked at the Postal Services guidelines for media mail and books and cds or any other printed bound material are covered, but the other items she purchased were not. I shipped them at media mail pricing and what she paid covered the shipment, however I was wondering if this might be a problem over time that the postal service will wonder why a larger package will be shipped media mail. Is there a way to flag certain items for certain types of shipping, lets say that if they order all media mail, then media mail pricing would be fine or if they or media mail items and parcel post items, then they would be required to pay the parcel post shipping fees. I don't know if this is possible, but I just don't feel right about shipping everything media mail, when it is clearly not media. Just let me know.[/FONT]
