How do you customize ZC frontpage to look like this.
Get rid of sideboxes,header,footer and set the main page to this somehow?

You should be able to put the HTML for this into the defined main page (admin > Tools > Define Pages Editor and pick define_main_page.php in the dropdown.)

Then in tpl_main_page.php, there are flags you can set up using $this_is_main_page to disable header, footer and sidebars on the main page.

You do realise that his front page is NOT a Zencart generated page?

But as gjh42 says, you could achieve it. Many of the files that make up ZC have instructions contained within the file itself.

How do you geta frontpage not created with ZC? You mean created in another program and set to the main page?

Look a bit deeper - all he's done there is create an html entry page with links IN to zencart. Go into the cart - then try to get back to that page.

You can build that opening page with ZC - and that would be my suggestion. Turn off/remove everything except the main categories and you would have them as the links. You will get better ranking and have fewer confused customers if you build it all with ZC.
