I'm having a problem with the image manager for htmlarea. the thumbnails of the images don't show. They have the small red x to show that theres a problem, but no images.

Sometimes this is due to having the wrong file extension (one that the image manager doesn't recognize) or a file with spaces in the file name (on an Apache server, this can cause images to "disappear" even though they've been uploaded.
