Yes, Zen Cart detects the card type from the CC number.

You can see the list of detectable card types in Admin->Configuration->Credit Cards. In that section you can also enable/disable acceptance of certain cards by Zen Cart. You should set these settings to match whatever cards you've negotiated with your bank for you to be able to accept/process.
