Layout Boxes, why redundant settings?

Why is the setup for the layout boxes have redundant activation for left right then single and off?

Wouldn't it be easier to simply have:
(X Left) (X Right) (X Single) (X Off)

Then you don't have to check between the left/right and single column settings...

You can but we will be re-writting the Admin down the line and this could be more trouble than it is worth ...
