In your admin, go to catalog->featured products and add the products you want to feature.

In the Configuration .... Index Listing ...
There are several sets of Centerboxes for the various locations on the main page ...
0 = OFF
And any other value is the Sort Order that the Centerboxes are displayed within each group of Centerboxes ...Linda McGrath
