Default Easy or Hard? Adding Weight attribute without Quantity affecting the weight

Ok, so I am new to the chapter of ZC attributes.

But I am having trouble getting this to work:

Have a weight attribute that is not affected by the quantity of the item:

    Example 1 :

    product info page:

    quantity box: 1063 units

    weight attribute drop down:

    weight 1lb
    weight 2lbs (selected by customer)
    weight 3lbs

    shopping cart page:

    quantity 1063 units, weight 2lbs

    Example 2:

    product info page:

    quantity box: 1063 units

    weight attribute drop down:

    weight 1lb (selected by customer)
    weight 2lbs
    weight 3lbs

    shopping cart page:

    quantity 1063 units, weight 1lbs

Why don't you put the weight directly on the Product or Attribute that holds the weight and then the quantity selected would reflect the weight ...

Customer's have no clue how to weight something ...

    Hello Linda!

I have the weight set up on most of my products,.........all but for one product type......on that ... The weight, has to be defined by the customer (weird one!)

Is there a way to have the weight be defined in the attributes without it being changed by the quantity?

or anyway to have the customer enter the weight, without the quantity changing that value of the weight?

ps. not sure what you mean
    Attribute that holds the weight

I cannot comprehend the situation to tell you how to work around this ...

What kind of Product would require a customer to enter the weight?

I have some customers who are coming to my store to pay for items sold off site (ebay) I have created a product type where they can enter a dollar amount as a quantity (yay ZC!) but the weight has to be defined customer as I do not know what they are going paying for.

    example:

    2 widgets sold on ebay:

    $5 small widget (weight 4oz)

    $5 large widget (weight 16oz)

    total $10 total weight 20oz

I had planned to have an shipping/weight attribute set up as a drop down:

    shipping small widget:
    1 widget small @ (4oz)
    2 widgets small @ (8oz)
    3 widgets small@ (16oz)

    and a separate attribute:

    shipping large widget:
    1 widget large @ (16oz)
    2 widgets large @ (32oz)
    3 widgets large@ (48oz)

but each time I try this the weight is multiplied by the quantity: $10 (entered as 1000 units (.01 price product) x 16oz = 1600lbs

    make sense?

    aha! a clue!

bummer ... no easy solution ...

While price works well on a product like this ... shipping does not ...

Can you mark the Product as Virtual ... and give the quote for the shipping as part of the Price?

Product as Virtual ... and give the quote for the shipping as part of the Price?
By Virtual do mean...no shipping weight on that product type, and have the customer enter an quoted shipping price on the same page (added to the product price) ex. $4 shipping + $10 products = $14?

this was my first thought, but if I could some how specify a weight with this product type...I could offer lower priced shipping incentives etc...to have them purchase more items...

no work around for this situation regarding this product type? and attributes huh? I suppose I could create 4oz and 16oz "shipping products" (sell shipping weight as a product) but that seems sloppy/too much work for the customer. Better to go with your suggestion of a text quoted price...

You talk to the customer on the phone ...

You say that will be $125 plus $15 shipping ...

So go to this URL blah blah blah and enter in the amount of $140.00 ...

If the Product for that is marked as Virtual then there is no Shipping Required ...

So the customer can add the custom product at the quoted Price + Shipping and get through the checkout ...
