Best Place for MenuNav Variables?

I am just learning PHP, and am creating a navigation menu up top on my store. I'd like it to display the current menu location continually until changed. We only have 6 or 7 products, and the main purpose of the page is 1/3 sales and 2/3 support.

What I'd like is to be able to put a <?php $navVar="home" ?> in my defined main page text, <?php $navVar="products" ?> on my product pages, <?php $navVar="support" ?> when you are in the support pages, and so on. However, I am not sure if this is the best method.

So my question is, where is the best place to add variables that can be accessed in any templates/pages? Or if my thinking here is completely screwed up, I'm not averted to a smack on the head.
