Creating a different template for different pages?

Hello, I have a hopefully quick question about template creation. I have read the faqs and various getting started posts etc and can manipulate the main page fairly well. I have a two column design on the main page (center, and right boxes) The center has my intro graphic and the right the more information links and search. However I would like a slightly different arrangement on the category main pages and product pages (I want different content in the right box). How do I customize the other pages? I do have my own template set up I am just not sure what the names are for the other pages or if it is one size fits all for the template.
