    Default Help With Slow site

    Hi Folks.

I am sorry if this question has been asked a number of times before. There are so many forums here I don't know where to look.

I have been setting up zencart on my site for the last few days and it is so low that it is virtually unuseable.

I ran some tests on the server to see if they were over loaded etc but they are fine with anything other than zencart and they are a zencart approved host ( globat ).

I have turned Gzip on, turned category counts off, turned off just about everything that I don't need, but my speed stats are still slow this is the main page first time in,

    Parse Time: 18.090 - Number of Queries: 150 - Query Time: 0.52972236525

    And then on refresh

    Parse Time: 11.027 - Number of Queries: 140 - Query Time: 0.592398927368

Is there anything obvious that I am missing, is it to do with the cache or some technical thingy!!!

I hope someone can help as I think the programme and facilities are great but if it runs this slow I know my customers will turn away through frustration.

    Any help would be appreciated.

The site is still in test at this address. http://www.rockingoose.com/index.php?main_page=

Ignore the layout problem I am still trying to get rid of that. The images etc are demo images still.

Thanks again for any help you can offer.

    Kas

Do you have the Firefox browser with the webdeveloper addon?

I used it to load your site and get a "speed report". This is part of what it said:
    Analysis and Recommendations

    * TOTAL_HTML - Congratulations, the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization.
    * TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 48 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
    * TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 44 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
    * TOTAL_CSS - Caution. The total number of external CSS files on this page is 3 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external CSS files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed CSS for high-traffic pages) on your pages.
    * TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 107293 bytes, which will load in 30.98 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback. Consider contacting us about our optimization services.
    * HTML_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this HTML file is 3804 bytes, which less than 20K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your page to display content in well under 8 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
    * IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 81399 bytes, which is over 30K. Consider optimizing your images for size, combining them, and replacing graphic rollovers with CSS.
    * CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 22090 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate.
    * MULTIM_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your external multimedia files is 0 bytes, which is less than 4K.

they are a zencart approved host ( globat ).
These fine folks are not ZC approved,
the list of certified hosts is listed above in the link named hosting,

they might offer ZC in their fantastico but that dosnt mean they are optomized for e-commerce

Sorry my error, Template Monster(where I got the template from) introduced me to Globat and I was mixing the association of those two up with zen and globat.

    Apologies

It is a standard template from templat monster (or monster template , can't remember which way it is now!) The only thing I have done to it is to change 3 images, all which are smaller in size than the original.

There are a lot of slices on the page , but this is how it came. I saved all of the image slices again and reduced the quality from the original to see if that helped.

Do you think it is just a combination of a bad template and poor host?

The host server apparently has 1100 sites on it. But when I try another cart I have been looking at it flys. The only thing is that the other cart doesn't have the attribute / stock features that are available with zencart.

So I am left a bit mixed up now...
