Yes it is slow, I would ask to be moved to a different server and see if they respond. Also look at the packge that your friend is on as they have eshop plans that are far different than the basic plans.

i say optimize your database, it seems to pick up later on in certain parts.

lol, I would follow Kobras suggestion,
their servers are not optomized for e-comerce and get over loaded easily,
they can move you to a faster server but then you run into the same issue when their servers fill upZen cart PCI compliant Hosting
