</br> is line break, no? If I just want a line break, not a whole new paragraph?

Unfortunately I have no idea what you are talking about as far as
HTMLArea is quite fond of not closing tags cleanly, particularly if you have a flurry of editing, inserting and deleting. I've found FCKEditor to be a lot better behaved in that field.
