Shop by Brand

Hi,
In each of our main categories we would like there to be an extra sub-category to shop by brand. Is the best way to do this to manually create sub-categories with the names of these brands? Or can the "Manufacturer" option be used to do something to this effect?

Also in the "Advanced Search" filter we would like customers to filter the product listings to appear in brands. Any way to do this?
