Curious shipping scenario

Most of my products are small-ish items that won't really have any special shipping rules, and is fairly straightforward.

I do, however have 3 similar items that are large, and relatively cheap.

I want to offer free shipping on orders over $150 on everything EXCEPT these large items. I can't really justify giving away free shipping on 2 large items that cost me as much to ship them as there is profit margin in the first place.

• So if a customer buys OVERSIZEITEM-1, it is less than $150, so I can charge shipping normally (so far basing it on weight, even though this item isn't necessarily heavy, just oversized dimensions, so I am increasing the weight on the item to be as much as UPS will charge for the oversize package).
• If they buy OVERSIZEITEM-1 and Smallitem2, now they are over $150, but I can't give them free shipping because it is now a huge box, or I lose money.
• If they buy Qty 2 smallitems, that are over $150, I can give them free shipping.

Anyone have any idea how I can make the freeshipping issue apply to anything EXCEPT these oversized packaged items?

I have the free shipping set up on the shipping module side, but set to false on the Order Total modules. Sometimes people want to upgrade to faster shipping even though it'd be free if shipped ground.

You would need some customization done ...

1 a flag on which items do not count or allow for Free shipping on orders over $150

2 Use Free Shipping Options freeoptions to manage a "choice" for Free Shipping when total >= 150.00 but ... add customization for those items that do not allow this ...

3 customization of Modules ... Order Totals ... Shipping ot_shipping ... to manage Free Shipping on orders >= 150 when not including the flagged products and are the only products in the order ... or ... skip this if always show regular shipping such as USPS or UPS and a Free Shipping Option for orders >= 150.00 with said customization ...

Okay, how would I flag a product in this way? I think I understand step 2, but that does me no good if I can't figure out step 1

There has to be an identifier of some sort to say This Product doesn't count towards the total order for free shipping so it is more or less a flag ...

If you have nothing to identify this with, you need to add a new field to the products table and then add that field to the Admin to allow you to change the setting when adding/editing ...

using something like:
product_is_never_free_shipping

Then this field needs to be used to figure out how much of the shopping cart belongs to these products that have the flag ...

You could then use the field product_is_call as one way of tracing out where the field has to appear in the /admin files for adding, editing, copying, etc.

Then build a function to calculate how much of the shopping cart is made from these products and how much it represents to exclude it from the free shipping ...

Or, you can build a function to calculate when those 3 products_id exist in the shopping cart and calculate their value to reduce the amount applied to the test for free shipping ...

If you will never have more products like this, then using the products_id is not a bad option ... but if this will grow in the future ... the flag is handy to have ...
