GoDaddy Woes

Hi all--

New guy here. I gather from searching the site that GoDaddy is not held in high esteem by Zen Cart users. I've tried loading and reloading ZC to my GoDaddy ftp site, and have gotten to the same point each time, check results that begin with a laundry list of these:

Warning: file, mail, opendir, readdir, closedir() has been disabled for security reasons in d:\hosting\vickisdrawers\catalog\zc_install\includes\functions\general.php on line 455

among many others. There are also:

<LI class=FAIL>admin configure.php is not writeable more info... <LI class=FAIL>store configure.php is not writeable more info...
and
  • <LI class=NA>Webserver = <LI class=NA>HTTP Host = vickisdrawers.com <LI class=NA>Path_Translated = d:\\hosting\\vickisdrawers\\catalog\\zc_install\\index.php <LI class=NA>PHP O/S = WINNT <LI class=NA>PHP API Mode = isapi <LI class=NA>PHP Max Execution Time per page = <LI class=OK>Register Globals = OFF <LI class=OK>MySQL Support = ON <LI class=OK>PHP Version = 4.3.2 <LI class=OK>PHP Safe Mode = OFF <LI class=OK>PHP Sessions Support = ON <LI class=OK>PHP Session.AutoStart = OFF <LI class=OK>PHP session.use_trans_sid = OFF <LI class=WARN>Suggested SQL Cache Folder = d:/hosting/vickisdrawers/catalog/cache Click here for more info <LI class=OK>PHP magic_quotes_runtime setting = OFF <LI class=OK>PHP GD Support = ON <LI class=OK>GD Version = GD bundled (2.0.12 compatible) <LI class=OK>PHP ZLIB Compression Support = ON <LI class=WARN>PHP cURL Support = OFF Click here for more info <LI class=WARN>PHP Upload Support = OFF upload_max_filesize=; post_max_size= Click here for more info
  • PHP Upload TMP dir =
and
The following info does not necessarily indicate any problem or configuration issue. It is simply for the sake of displaying it in an easy-to-find location.
  • <LI class=NA>PHP include_path = <LI class=NA>PHP SMTP destination = <LI class=NA>PHP sendmail path = <LI class=NA>PHP sendmail 'from' = <LI class=OK>PHP open_basedir restrictions = <LI class=WARN>PHP Output Buffering (gzip) = OFF <LI class=OK>PHP FTP Support = ON <LI class=OK>PHP XML Support = ON
  • PHP Session.Save_Path = Unknown
Is their a tutorial or post for dealing with GoDaddy? I've look around a lot and can't find something for raw recruits like me. Hate to repeat a question already handled here, but I need help.

Thanks,

Ric

Re: GoDaddy Woes

Whatever hosting plan you chose is not going to work for you ... at least not with Zen Cart.

Warning: file, mail, opendir, readdir, closedir() has been disabled for security reasons
PHP O/S = WINNT
PHP Version = 4.3.2
PHP cURL Support = OFF
PHP Upload Support = OFF

1. While Zen Cart "can" be used on Windows hosts, this particular one is not well configured for ecommerce use, evidenced by the many other issues happening.
2. The PHP version is the oldest possible version supported by Zen Cart. There are several newer versions out with many bugfixes since then.
3. CURL support is used for many payment-processing and shipping-quoting systems. Without it, those features will not work.
4. PHP Upload support is required if you plan to collect uploaded file submissions from your clients, such as artwork on print jobs etc.
5. Having the "file" function disabled is minor, but a bit limiting.
Having the PHP "mail" function disabled can be crippling unless alternate services for sending email are provided.
6. Zen Cart uses the opendir/readdir/closedir functions regularly to provide its flexible override services.

In short, this is not the correct server or hosting plan for you.

If you're locked into a contract, get them to switch you to a Linux server without any of these restrictions, as a start. Then try accessing the system-inspection page again.

Or make it easier on yourself and find a fast, reliable, affordable host from our recommended hosting partners (see the "hosting" link at the top of this page).

Re: GoDaddy Woes

Don't know of you can switch, but I think the Linux hosting will work. I have not tried Zen, but know they support osCommerse. I like the Linux hosting better anyway, being a Unix/Linux admin by trade anyway...

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I have my Zen hosted on GoDaddy - so far no problems.
I am using Linux and I installed the ZenCart from GoDaddy,
then changed templates.

Feel free to take a look. charmedbytina.com

PS....I hope you don't find out that I've done something wrong and don't even know it yet!

PSS. Everyone here in the Forum is sooooo helpful. I wouldn't have a web presence yet if help wasn't available here!

THANKS!!!!!

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I also have a site hosted with godaddy.

You have to switch to their linyx host which you can do in your control panel.

You can not use godaddy if you are going to use a major credit card processor.

The site I have hosted with godaddy uses paypal only module.

I have to say that my zen cart install was flawless. keep in mind you need to install via ftp and not in their control panel as the control panel is binary not ascii.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I'm running Windows on a PC and know nothing about Linux, never used it, sounds beyond my tech capabilities.

Major credit card processors, PayPal, etc. all work on my current site (using Fortune3 storefront) hosted by GoDaddy. Are you telling me that all I have to do to use Zen Cart on my test site is click a Linux button on their control panel?

Thanks for the replies.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I don't remember you saying anything about a locolhost on your computer.

I believe your question was about godaddy hosting.

If you want your website on a test site on your computer you will need to install a wamp.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

Well you click that and you will probably loose everying on your windows server. I would talk to the GoDaddy folk about the best way to convert over. From a hosting standpoint it is not much different running under linux except that your Zen will work. You FTP files up to the server, as before. I like Godaddy for my domain registreation they have great multi year deals. But for hosting I don't use them much since they don't provide a secure way to access my files only shared hosting server. I would much rather use sftp or ftp over ssh than just ftp and let my password fly over the net like that. But I am getting off a tangent here.. sorry.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I have been hosting with Go Daddy for years and have used Zen Cart a few times successfully on the Linux servers. On the new hosting accounts you can install Zen Cart right from the hosting control panel in the Additional Applications feature.

In general then, you have not really experinced the speed and power of Zen Cart...as their shared server platforms are relatively slow compared to what can be realized on a correctly configured server.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

True, they are not the swiftest configured boxes out there... but such is life in the world of cheat hosting for the masses... :) Like I said I only have one paid hosting account with them that I use for a test/droppoff area, and then the free hosting I get with the some domain names that are used for "junk" areas as well. Most of my hosting is currently with Micfo (who are going through some growing pains right now as well).. just can't win it seems...

Re: GoDaddy Woes

I recently switched from Go Daddy because my site was running so slow. They are extremely friendly when you call them, but the blame always goes to someone else. My new host (a Zen certified host) moved everything for me and had me up and running quickly. My site now runs at lightning speed. Woo hoo! I do still host with Go Daddy for some blog sites, and those seem to run just fine. It was just Zen that Go Daddy wasn't handling very well.

By the way, I can't remember, but I think it was being run on windows, so maybe if I had switched to linux then my problems would've been solved. Who knows. I'm glad I switched anyway, my new host has a way better control panel too.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

One of the things I did notice, is Godaddy the web servers and the DB servers are on different systems. I think this is part of the problem. I was hosting a small chat room which used MySQL and it got to the point where it was unusable and was getting a lot of DB timeout problems. Don't know if there was just a network issue behind the scenes or the DB server was overloaded. I move to another hosting provider where the DB server is on the same system as the web server ( the setup I prefer) and it blazes... Different schools of thought go into play when setting up things like that... And yes I agree the control panel at godaddy is not the greatest... But they are adding more features I did notice...

I'm using godaddy linux hosting, and everything seems to be running fine so far. My site is not 100% finished yet, but I have yet to run into any problems.

Re: GoDaddy Woes

Godaddy has a “CURL proxy”, I think this was the reason when I tried to edit my database my page would time out and what ever I was editing would be completely deleted, this also caused thing like my paypal express not to work

Heres a thread that talks specifically about GoDaddy and CURL proxy setup:
http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61528

If you have a Godaddy server and if your page times out it may be because CURL timeouts, this suggests DNS or firewall problems"

From what I gather GoDaddy may block access to your database... I have never had this problem with the other 7 servers I have had over the years, and I have to complain about their email accounts, they only give you 25MB accounts unless you pay them an extra $19 per year for 1GB account, they also do not have automatic creating of FTP accounts for your addon domains and you can only manually set up 5 before you have to pay for more, I thought they would be great but they have been annoying in soo soo many ways…
