in admin under reports i see customer referal but my question is.. how does the customer referal works???

There is a setting that allows you to use the Discount Coupon code as a first referral or when the account is created ask for the referral code ...

What it does is record a referral code ... and the report then shows the sales for the month for the "used" referral codes ...

Say you give Fred the referral code: FredSentMe

If you turn the feature on in Configuration ... Customer Details:

Customers Referral Status
Customers Referral Code is created from
0= Off
1= 1st Discount Coupon Code used
2= Customer can add during create account or edit if blank

NOTE: Once the Customers Referral Code has been set it can only be changed in the Admin Customer 

And make a Discount Coupon for FredSentMe ... when this is used either as the 1st Discount Coupon or where the customer enters this referral code ... it will track sales for those customers with that referral code ...

This is a very very simplistic system for seeing where customers might come from and encouraging them to tell you by giving them a Discount Coupon before the fact and being able to identify "how" they got the Discount Coupon ...

hmmm... I can't make heads or tails of this function.

I would like all new customers to receive a discount coupon for $10 off their first order over $50. Is this possible using the "Customers Referral Status" setting?

I have tried setting that to "2= Customer can add during create account or edit if blank" and then signed up a test account. I was able to type in anything I liked into the referral field.

After typing "test" and logging in I looked to see if I have a coupon, which I didn't. I did have a note in my account saying my referral code was "test".

Do I have to pre-create named coupons.. in which case it's obviously not going to work to have customers randomly type in where they had heard of the store. The chance they'd guess the name of the coupon is remote.

So I could use the other setting that says "1= 1st Discount Coupon Code used
" but what does that mean?
