Has anyone doen any research on this

Zencart uses the category names for your metatag keywords and description, but there is some edits you can do so you can use your own keywords and description.

Which way is better? Anyone had good results with either?

You can customize the Products and Categories by clicking on the black biohazard icon ... it turns orange when set ...

You can customize the file:
/includes/modules/meta_tags.php

by copying to your templates and overrides directory:
/includes/modules/your_template_dir/meta_tags.php

and customize the case statements that you want to work differently ...
