is there a section to explain ssl?? or can someone explain this??

i understand its a secure section of a sever whioch help to protect information for cliets and admin.

the thing i dont understand is, im looking to set up my store online using paypay as my payment modual but i have been given the choice of shared SSL or dedicated SSL

whats the difference appart from price and what are the pros and cons of each etc??

can someone explain this to me please??

My understandign on this is very limited So I will let the experts give the full answer.

I recently went through the same choices as you are faceing and in the end I opted for a dedicated SSL cert form my primary domain. This was a personal choice and one I am happy with. Shop around to get the best deal in the end my Quick SSL premium cert only cost £50.00 for 12 months.

When an SSL Certificate is used, any information entered into a Form is encrypted. Nobody can read the information but you -- presuming it is your site.

All Certificates must be Registered to one Domain name. That Domain name Owner though, can choose to 'share' their Certificate. Think of it as a Vehicle, which is Registered to one person but they let you drive it.

Shared SSL Cert
This will show the Domain name the Cert is Registered to. Although you can use it, it is not a good idea for a Business to have someone else's Domain name showing.

Dedicated SSL Cert
This is Registered to 'your' Domain name and nobody uses it but you. The best (only?) option to go with for doing business on the Internet.

so if i got a dedicated ssl cert could i then share this with another site if i set up another one in the future??

This bit I do know.

You have a choice of a one domain SSL (e.g. www.mysite.biz) or a wildcard SSL cert. With a wildacrd Cert you can have it for the whole of the root domain so the followign would also be covered under that cert

www.wholesale.mysite.biz, www.flowers.mysite.biz, www.shoes.mysite.biz.

Basically it covers any sub domain under the main domain. If on the other hand you want to det a totally new domain like www.mysite2.biz then my understanding is that you would need a new cert.

You can get a company Cert that you can add more domains too but that will be BIG bucks.

If that site was part of your Hosting account with the same Hoster, yes.

so basically i can have a fully running ecommerce site running secure and safe with ssl on either a shared or dedicated ssl.

only difference is that if i get a shared ssl it will show a different address in the address bar other than my domain name.

When using a Shared SSL, your Domain name not shown in the URL nor in the Certificate. Also, if not setup correctly there maybe other problems as well.

For some Site Owners the need to have their Domain name displayed at all times is important. As the cost of a Dedicated SSL Cert is $50 or less per yr. and maybe a few dollars as well for a Dedicated IP, it is a good idea to go that route.

see what you mean for the extra could of quid its worth keeping your name in the url as it just increases the site/business credability when you own our own ssl cert,

but what about a dedicated ip?? what that all about??
