I have not installed the Gift Certificate module, yet the Gift Certificate FAQ page link appears on my main page.
How do I remove the Gift Certificate FAQ link from my Information sidebox?

Admin> Modules> Order Totals> Gift Certificates , disable the module.

So simple! I could kick myself!
Even with the Zen cart e-start book I found myself going round in circles - I blame having square eyes!!!!!!
