Random Items from All Products on Main Page

The products in my shop don't often change. I would like to display, say, 6 random items on the main page, from ALL items (as opposed to new, special, featured). I've searched and don't see a way to do it.

An alternative would be to display all the categories with their images.

I just want the main page to have lots of content on it all the time, whether or not I have specials going. Is there a way to do it?
