Can I delete these things?

Could I delete the ones marked in red? They just look funny to me.

In your admin > config > layout settings > Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF > set to off/"0"

admin > config > layout settings > Customer Greeting - Show on Index Page > set to "0"

admin > config > layout settings > Define Breadcrumb Status > set to "0"

For the Breadcrumbs - You might reconsider this as it really make it simpler for your customers to navigate and not have to continually use the back selector in their browser

Can I delete the Welcome to my store text? If I just get rid of the text, won't it keep the carriage return (vertical space where it would have been)?

This turns "customer greeting" off

I did delete that (the "Hello, Mary, would you like to spend the rest of your money?") but I also wanted to turn off "Welcome to my store" which appears above it. Is that possible?

One thing you can do is add this to your stylesheet:

#indexDefaultHeading {display: none;}

I can check if there is an admin switch for it, but this works.

The lazy man's way: rather than looking up the file to edit myself, I'll just point you here ;)

Thanks, I just got through the majority of the manual about customization and I need to pay attention to the part about using the override system. I didn't know about changing the master template/page/coding and not making a copy and saving that in the override system. I do now. So thanks for reinforcing the thought of overrides. I am also going to be trying the {display:none} trick. That's another brilliantly simple approach (which didn't I think of that....well that's what fresh eyes are for )
