Simple Gallery Solution

I have been struggling to find a Gallery application that was easy to set up & intergrated into the Zencart look & feel.

I managed to set up Gallery2 but I was really looking for something that kept the Zencart sidebars, menus etc

I tried to setup the Singapore Gallery intergration but I'm not that technologically minded & couldn't figure it out (okay I'm a complete newby)

I finally stumbled across the following solution.

I have set up a Gallery product as a document - general product which is not added to the cart and then added additional images to the product.
I have the lightbox application installed & I think it looks pretty good & is almost exactly what I was looking for.

Same here...but I am curious...how did you manage to setup G2? I cannot get the integration in G2 to accept any path I try for Zencart. Argh...and I am going nuts.

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

PCGoddess I wasn't able to intergrate G2 into Zencart, I only got as far as installing it & playing around with it abit before realising I wasn't going to be able to do what I wanted with it.

This is an update of the original Google Summer of Code module written by Michael Rodriguez-Torrent, reworked for Zen Cart 1.3.X and Gallery2.
It has been working for 8 months or so, and tested up to Zen Cart 1.3.7 and Gallery2 2.2.1, but is labelled Beta as I have had insufficient feedback from users to declare it solid enough for release.
Feel free to assist me past that hurdle.

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

I'm trying to install gallery2. This is my first go at trying to add anything to my site on my own . I read through the instructions. One thing is confusing to me.

Installation
==========
1) Upload the files in gallery2/ to your Gallery 2 directory and the files in zencart/ to your Zen
Cart directory.
so my question: where to I place the gallery2 folder? my guess would be at the root (public_html).

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

Diva, wehn you are setting up your "Gallery" product you need to select 'Document - General' from the drop down box at the bottom then click 'New Product' then enter your information.

Then follow the tutorial for adding additional images:

https://www.zen-cart.com/tutorials/index.php?article=58

I'm using the Zen Lightbox module http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&cPath=40_47&products_id=273

I hope this clears things up a bit.

Lucky.. Thanks for your response.. Your gallery solution is genius!!! It does EXACTLY what I want.. If you don't mind sharing I do have two more questions..

What file did you modify to get rid of the remaining shopping cart buttons?? ("Write a Review" & "Tell A Friend")

How did you work around not having a main product image?? I thought that ZenCart depended on the main product image being there in order to recognize the additional product images??

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

Diva,

You need to edit the

includes/templates/template_default/templates/tpl_document_general_info_display.php

files and remove the Main Product Image, Tell a Friend button & Reviews button and count code then save it to your overrides file.

You still need a main image eg: image.jpg and then all your additional images eg: image_1.jpg etc but without the Main Product Image code it won't display the main image picture anymore.

I'm not sure I understand how you have an image code that does not display.. (Sorry if I am being dense here..)

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

The code block that displays the main image can be removed without affecting the function that recognizes what the main image is supposed to be. Then the additional images can be displayed as usual.

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

In order to display additional images you need a main image to start with, it's usually the one uploaded when you add a new product, then you put all your additional images in the same file.

Usually the main image displays at the top of the product information screen, above the product details and all the additional images display below the product info, however with the removal of the Main Product Image code the main image doesn't show up anymore, What I did was name one of my images gallery.jpg, then made another copy of it and called it gallery_3.jpg so even though the gallery.jpg image doesn't display the gallery_3.jpg does.
You can leave the code in if you like but I like the look of it without better.

Does all that make sense?

Katie & Glenn..

Thank you both.. Apparently I WAS being a little dense!

I missed this in your first response..

Reading is fundemental! My apologies.. I was bouncing between here and Template Monster's support site.. Now if I can get those twits to figure out what they hacked in their template to screw up how additional product images display, then it should be all good.. This is a neat and effective solution..

One last thing.. How did you get your galleries to show up amongst your product categories.. Mine shows up only in the Document sidebox.. Which I can live with, but I was just curious how you got yours to show up with the rest of your products..

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

Configuration > Layout Settings > Split Categories Box - set to false, to not display the documents sidebox separately.

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

thanks very much fordeatiling how you achieved your gallery.

How did you get all your images to set at that certain size and positions within your page..it looks very neat, whilst mine just get placed randomly!

Thanks

Re: Simple Gallery Solution

I thought I'd add this little tidbit to this thread since there were some who expressed interest in using ZenCart with Gallery2. I've been messing around with with a coupla things to come up with a gallery solution (which is what led me to this thread and lucky_starre's brilliant solution!)

In my experiments, I think I may have gotten Zen to play nice with Gallery2.. I did not want to use the Gallery2 mod because I'm not interested in selling pictures.. Only in displaying them.. This seemed like a simpler way to get to that end result..

I basically used EZPages and created an EZPage with an iframe that points to my gallery. I had to do some tweaking to the Gallery album.tpl and template.tpl files to get the Gallery2 layout to blend in with my ZenCart template. I might do a little more tweaking to the Gallery2 template, but I think it came out okay.. If anyone would like to see the end result click here
