    Default Override System

I am a newbie, but a quick learner so I would appreciate a kick into the right direction.

I am going to customize my site using the override system. Th only modification I have made so far has caused me a lot of concern. Under includes/templates, I have added a sub-directory /custom. I modified a copy of template_info.php and placed it in that directory. No other changes were made. I switched the template selection in the Admin panel to "custom" and reset the boxes controller.

When I previewed the cart, I was amazed! The green color scheme was gone, side boxes missing and a variety of color appeared throught. What is happening here? Please help.
