Is it possible for customers to use PayPal express without having a PayPal account and paying only with their credit card?

Yes,
In your paypal profile you have to make paypal optional.

Your PayPal account must also be either a Business or Premier one. The personal account doesn't give you that ability. I think the Express Checkout option only comes with the prior editions as well.
