Does anyone know of a way to manage the sort order of a product that is cross linked in multiple categories. Ultimately I would like to control the absolute sort order in all of my categories.

naturalolive - Did you ever find the answer to this? I'd like to know the same thing.
If I remember correctly, there is something in the Admin, products adding/ editing.
I will also be doing that in the near future, as soon as I've solved other problems, if I find it, will let you guys know.
I too am now having the exact problem only I didn't realize this until I was three hours in changing sorts orders and now have screwed up the whole store ..lolIf you find the answer post it I will continue to look as well.

Here is how I fixed my issue. This worked for me because I have relatively few items that are referenced in more than one place.
Say I have two categories, each with 10 products. Product #5 in Category 1 is the same product as Product #8 in Cat 2. I'll house the product in Category 1, and reference it from there in Cat 2.
Since its product #8 in Cat 2, I will give it a sort order number of 7 (as 0 is the starting point) in Cat 1. The products following it will then increment from there. Products in Cat 2 will have a normal sort order.
Products in Cat 1 will have a sort order as such:This is not an ideal solution, especially if you have a lot of referenced products, or if they are in many categories, but it worked for my small issue.
