The simple answer is:

Admin-Configuration-Product Listing;
`Include Product Listing Alpha Sorter Dropdown = false

That is the way to do it!

I'm having the same problem i want to get rid of the
alpha sorter and keep the manufacturer filter.

how difficult would it be for a noob like me to change the code
and/or add new filters for custom product fields?
