Default SSL Certs - where do I install them?

Hello everyone - ICON IT is new and new to this forum. We've built our zen site, etc, set up paypal and google checkout ... I would like to secure the site after customer log in, which poses a couple of questions:
    1) The information in this forum varies, some suggest certs deployed on the server, others on the site itself, I have found a venue for neither (I've contacted the host administrator for his input as well)
    2) Googlecheckout requires https for api call back, so it seems this will become the norm - and I'm thinking I'm not the first vender to come across this. Some threads suggest a simple code change (http: to https:) others mandate a copy of the catalogue ... which is true(r)?

    Cheers.

this is going to depend on what control panel system you are using

and to be able to use https you will need to purchase and install ( have your host install )

Just thought I would throw my suggestion in - if you are using cpanel and a SSL cert from godaddy just purchase the credit and let the host install it. host-99.com did everything for me and thank god cause even they had some trouble getting it to work. I had used a godaddy cert with a different provider and i used 2 rekeys to try and get it working which i never could.

    just some friendly knowledge. :)
