    Default Meta-Tag Information Help

    Hi,
I am currently going back in and setting up all of my Meta-Tag information for all of my 200+ products. (Should have done this to start with, but, oh well...)

Anyway, just to clarify, when you put in the Meta-Tag Description, should I put relatively the same thing (i.e. "The Furr Factor offers Austin Texas dog training and modern dog accessories including collars & leads, harnesses, jewelry, engravable tags, bowls, feeders, custom bedding, outdoor beds, dog toys, dog carriers, and much more...") under description for ALL the products - or, do I make the description more specific to each specific product?

Also, is there a way to copy Meta-Tag information from one product to the next? For example, I have say, 6 different jeweled collar charms that would all have pretty much the same search keyword - rather than type them over and over again it would be easier to copy the info like you can copy products from one category to the next...

Any help or advice on Meta-Tags is appreciated!

    Thanks!
    Tiffany

Google is busy 'messing' with us regarding Meta information. As most of you know, Google has dropped the use of Keywords... and for good reason. Folks tend to 'pad' their key words in hopes of better results. (However, some other search engines still use them)
I really like the way Google has tackled the folks who 'cheat' the rest of us.
Google has done something else in the description meta tag. According to the 'latest scoop' Google has decided to compare the Title meta tag with the Description meta tag - and are giving higher rankings when they match. It is best you move some of your keywords into the Title and Description meta area - but do not try to pad them with meaningless terms. Otherwise, Google will 'find you out' and take you down a notch or two (smile).

There is much discussion here on the forums regarding search engines... and it is all worth reading and studying. It is the real way our customers find us.

Got it Linda - I am gathering that I should make the description fit the item the person is looking for and not so broad...makes sense when you put it that way.

Jund, are you saying that if someone is using Google to search then anything in the keyword section at all is pointless?
I understand they have to be there for other search engines, but, just curious.

Glad you all wrote when you did - saved me a lot of re-doing...Thanks!

Your question is a good one.

My opinion is that providing the correct keywords (correct meaning proper quantity, site related, etc.) is never pointless. However, Google places its emphasis on Title, Description, Links, and they still rely on the old familiar html tags H1-H6. If you analyze what they are looking at, it is the same thing we 'look at' when we (humans) 'look at' when you are doing research in the library - e.g., first there is the Dewey Decimal system, the irony of which it is a dot-notated system very similar to the URL, then we look up a Title, and review the Preface (description), review the TOC (site map with headings), and best of all, a good book has an INDEX with all the 'links' to the various pages... bottom line - you have to act like a search engine to understand how Google does it.
Having said all that nonsense, you will note I have avoided saying that it is pointless. Keywords are used by many search engines - Google uses Adwords that you pay for...

Where did I get all this info. I subscribe to this site: http://searchenginewatch.com/ I find it is current on the latest search 'stuff.' They include current answers to almost any question you may have regarding search engines. Hopefully they are not part of 'the system', that is, they are not 'bought' by the system to tout one engine over another.

My apologies for the fire hose approach to an answer...
