Default Back from oblivion... now what?

Well, after moving my site to one of the certified zen cart hosts and hosting it with them for a total of about 24 hours which could only be described as 'catastrophic', I'm back with GoDaddy and trying to pick up the pieces of what was once a thriving online store.

It seems to be a matter of restoring my configuration to what it was before the switch, and I've covered everything I can think of, but the cart now takes 14 seconds to load, and sometimes it actually times out and shows the following error:
    Code:
2013 Lost connection to MySQL server during query in:
    [select code, title, symbol_left, symbol_right, decimal_point,
    thousands_point, decimal_places, value from currencies]
Does anyone have any idea of where I might start looking for the source of the trouble?

    Many thanks.

Well you've switch from one dns to the other twice in 48 hours it seems.

Go to www.dnsreport.com and run a test on your domain name. See what errors you get.

It may just take some time for the dns servers to realize what happened.

That's probably why you had problems with the other host as well. You've got to give internet time to catch up. We're all into instant gratification but there are some things that just take some time. like updating millions of routers and dns servers.

If you have a dns "leak" you need to have your domain name registrar refresh the domains dns settings. Something like that.

Hey JP, thanks for the reply. It's a good thought, but I'm not sure how a DNS issue would affect a mysql query while all the non-zencart pages of the site continue to function properly. In fact, in each case, (going both to and fro) the DNS changes actually propagated pretty quickly. The major issue was that this particular hosting company went totally offline the very night I signed up with them, and stayed that way for the next 22 hours. And I don't just mean their clients' sites went down, their own site was down, too! It's as if you went to GoDaddy.com's home page and got the "Server is taking too long to respond" error -- for 22 straight hours! After 22 hours they actually came back up for 2 hours before going back down again, and after that I stopped keeping track. They also haven't replied to a single email since then, but I'm back with GoDaddy and my site is back up, which is way more important then chasing down my 36 bucks...

Since my original post here I've upgraded to PHP5 and mysql 5, setup a new database on a different server and loaded all my tables into the new db and everything seems to be running fine now. So I guess this is a happy ending. Now if I could just get rid of this nervous twitch....

I'll be honest with you -- I had to leave GoDaddy because one of my sites I hosted with them went down last year, and they kept insisting it was my site when in reality it was they had oversold their services and installed a super high user on the same MySQL server I was on.

If you are on a different MySQL server on GoDaddy than you were on before your switch, I'd be willing to bet that's contributing to it.

I switched to a new hosting service and was amazed at how much faster my sites ran -- doing nothing but changing host servers.

I was with GoDaddy for over 6 years, and when I first started with them, they were great. Now, all they do is "escalate" your problem to a higher tech level and still say there's nothing wrong even though you can't get into your site. For years I heard people complaining about GD, but I hadn't had any problems with them until Thanksgiving of last year. Then I understood why people were complaining.

If letting it sit a day or two doesn't resolve the DNS issue, then you may have to bit the bullet and switch again.

Thanks MM, yes, I'm back up again, and it was actually nothing to do with DNS at all. And I did move the db to another server along with doing about a dozen other things, some combination of which ended up solving the problem. Specifically what did the trick I don't know.

And I used to feel that way about GoDaddy until I experienced the alternative. I was the biggest GD basher around; even thought of registering godaddyblows.com. But not any more.
