Default Please point me to the right help documents - installing templates

    Hi,

I've just installed Zen cart, and want to use one of the templates on this site to make it look prettier. I'm not hugely familiar with css and the like, and I don't know whether I'm looking at the right help files half the time.

Basically, having downloaded a template from this site, I need to know how to use the file.

Can anyone out there tell me which help files I need to check out? My brain's become fuzzy working through the library on my own.

    Thanks in advance,

    Pete

    Pete,

Normally, if it is one of the templates available here for download, it is already in the Zen Cart file structure format and enclosed in a series of folders that reside inside one named "includes".

All that shoould be required is that you use your FTP client and open your host to the directory where you have the cart installed (this is where your can see the admin folder and the includes folder on your host) and drag/copy the local includes folder for the template to the host.

There should be a read me file with the template that should outline the install and any deviations that there might be.

    Thanks,

I can't find them in the version of Zen cart I downloaded though. There's only a default template that I can see - unless I'm looking in all the wrong places, which is very probable.

    Thanks again,

    Pete

To clarify, the only template I'm being offered is 'Classic Contemporary Green'. The one I'm trying to install is Candied Blueberry, available from the downloads section.

Any help you can offer in getting me started on the style change would be appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Pete

I seem to be missing something very fundamental.

I've successfully changed the template to Glossy Blue in the admin panel, and replaced the style sheet with the one for Candied Blueberry.

But nothing seems to have changed.

Please check out www.punkervision.net/store to see the current state of the zen cart store. It shouldn't look like this at all.

I'm obviously not doing something obvious. If anyone knows what it is, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Pete

    Page not found.

When you unzip the template you downloaded to your computer, did it come with a Readme file to look at? It should have unzipped with a file structure. You want to upload that whole file (folder) structure up to your server to the store.

Usually, you create new directories (how many depends on your template). Everywhere you see a "classic" folder, you can create a CUSTOM (replace CUSTOM with your template name) folder. Make sure there's no spaces in the folder names. That can cause a problem.

(I've spent two days solid on Joomla code, so bear with me. *LOL*)

FTP the files of the unzipped template up to your server. You should at the very least have includes/templates/CUSTOM/... and an images/ and css/ folder.

Once you've uploaded everything, go to the backend Admin control panel screen to
Tools-->Template Selection. There should be an Edit button. Click that, and you'll see a dropdown menu with the name of your new template.

    Select it. Click Update.

Go to your live site and refresh to see changes.

Now, you said you installed a template and replaced the stylesheet of that template with one for yet a third template, am I understanding you correctly?

You can't replace one stylesheet with another without making changes. You have to change the stylesheet for the template you're using.

Let us know when you get your site back up and we might be able to offer more advice.

I've since removed all the files. On a hunt for answers, I founds another shoppinbg cart program, whose developers offer an installation service and optional (chargeable-at-a-reasonable-rate) support subscriptions, in addition to active userbase and messageboard full of users and developers...

So I decided it made more sense for me to spend a little money than waste a lot of time. It would be a different story if I was more clued up on web-related things, but i'm not.

    Thanks again,

    Pete
