Payment Confusion ... Help!

Here's what I want to do. I want to be able to take payments without the customer needing a paypal account. I want to be able to take all major CC's and maybe online checks (though not necessary).

Can anyone tell me the best way to do this. I'm a little confused by the paypal express, ipn, business account etc. Or do I need to go through a payment gateway and get a merchant account at a bank?

I'm pretty new to the payment side of things if you can't tell. I have been searching the threads, but it seems like everyone already understands the basics of all this stuff.

In that case you install the CC module......... Your buyer is asked to give credit cart info at checkout. You then are emailed part of the number and the other part is accessible through admin

Well I was looking for a little less manual of a solution as I am tremendously lazy. With the method you're describing, I think I would need to enter the CC numbers into a terminal. Isn't there a service that will let me do this automatically? But without needing a paypal account?

Well, You look for a supported cc module and then sign up for an account with one of them. Then when your buyer enters card info the module hook up to the card site processes your payment and deposites funds in your account.

Not too sure what you are getting at. Either case you need to have a card processor account or choose PayPal.
