You can use Feature Products to do that. You can set it to show 1 of them on the home page, then just add a lot of featured products, then it will randomly select one.

Go to your admin, go to "Catalog", then "Featured Products" Add all the featured products you'd like.

Go to "Configuration", then "Index Listing", and make sure Featured Products is turned on the main page.

Then go to "Configuration", "Maximum Values", and set "Maximum Display of Featured Products - Main Page" to "1" (if you only want one at a time to show).

Now, the only thing is that the description won't show... that would take some code modification.
