To reset the shopping cart you can use:
$_SESSION['cart']->reset(true);

Now you just need to decide where to place that ...

The login is a nice location ... however, if I just spend 20 minutes shopping in your store and adding to my cart and then login ... I am going to be really ticked off that you just reset my shopping cart ...
