Display Categories on Main Page but without...

How do I display the categories on the main page, but NOT have the specials and new products or featured items also show up?

I have set Configuration -> Layout Settings:

Categories - Always Show on Main Page

to 1 to show categories on main page, but then it also shows the new products and featured products.

I just want the categories on Main Page, sub pages can have the added info.

Admin > Configuration > Index Listing > set various centerboxes for a number of different pages.

I did it.

I think I turned it off in the layout settings. I'll jump in there and check what the actually settings are.

I have the show categories on main page turned off, yet I still have subcategories showing up. what did I forget to change?
