Is there a way to change the url for landing pages?

Categories display the url as http://www.abc123.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1. Is there a way to change the url to display the actual category name? Let's say that I sell sports equipments. Can I have the url display something like this - http://www.abc123.com/index.php?main_page=bikes or this http://www.abc123.com/bikes. The url doesn't have to be exactly like those examples, but if possible I would like to change the characters after http://www.abc123.com/.

Search for SEO URLS or ultimate SEO URLS for many a thread about a mod that is available in the downloads section. I suggest you read the threads before you install this mod. It took me a while to get everything working on a windows server. I see the guys also have varios issues even on non-windows.
