USPS module users - advice needed

Hey guys, I was hoping I could get some advice here... I'm incredibly worn and stressed from work and my brain isn't functioning properly so if my question seems convoluted or otherwise weird, I apologize. For those who are using zen cart with the USPS modules, I have some questions if you would be willing to take a minute to check out my dilemma.

I'm running a distro that sells CDs, LPs and other music related merchandise. I've been setting up the shipping module and whatnot, but I notice all of my options for international shipping seem to be rather expensive to other stores I've seen. I'd like to have the cheapest rates available but I just don't know if I can achieve that, or what I need to do. Does anyone here use international shipping with USPS on their store for items about 1-5lbs in weight? I'd like to know what the most sensible options are available to me.

Another thing, is it possible to assign different tare settings to specific items? Some packages cost more than others... I think it's weird to have a universal tare setting when the cost is not universal also.

You would have to do some customization to the core code to utilize different Tare Rates on a per Product level ...

The Tare is current based on Percentage or Weight or a combination of the two ... for the Small/Medium and Large Packages where Small/Medium is used on anything up to the Maximum weight and Large is used for when the weight exceeds the Maximum ...
