Default SSL Required for Zen and Paypal?

We want to know if ZEN requires an SSL Cert to test to see if our customers PayPal is set up properly.

Please Note that we are new at this.

So far WITHOUT an SSL cert installed we havent had any luck getting money into his paypal account.
Everthing else (orders appearing, email notifications sent out etc.) are working fine.

    What's going on?

We have the latest version of Zen.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

I don't have an SSL cert installed and I've taken Paypal orders. I'm not sure why you're having problems, but I don't think it has to do with a SSL certificate.

It is advisable on a live store but not required.

Check that you are using the default paypal email address with no typos etc. (Note it must be the default address.)

As I understand it, you definitely want to use SSL. If you don't, unencrypted data is sent between PayPal and Zen Cart. Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but it seems like since the payment is all on PayPal's end though, it's not credit card data that's sent between PayPal and Zen Cart, but just customer order data.

However, not using SSL shouldn't break the process. So that's probably not the problem.

SSL is not required to pay via PayPal.

Although my site is only semi-live my colleagues have been able to place dummy orders without SSL - and pay for them via PayPal.
We're now settled in at our final home - http://www.swiftbooks.co.uk - where you'll find an eclectic collection of used books. Still a lot of work to do, though!

Wow... as a first time user I am overwhelmed by the fast response of all involved and the valuable help offered!!!

After reading the posts I agree with Ryan... the lack of SSL should NOT be breaking the process... the money SHOULD be going to PayPal.

I'll keep digging and hope for a break through... (and of course let everyone know how it gets fixed) Thanks ALL!
