Left Nav Different Layout for Each Category

Have been using zen-cart for the past 4 weeks and love it!

Have my categories (3) and subcategories (many) all showing in the left column. Need to have the subcategories of 1 category appear differently than the other 2.

The subs on the first category need to appear each on a new line (as they do now). The subs for the third category need to appear in-line with a break in between each.

Have tried editing the source and css but always wind-up applying the changes to the subcategories of all 3 categories. Any thoughts?

Not my idea - client's request.

The first 2 categories only have 5 or 6 subs. The 3rd category has around 50 subs. This has made the page very long and requires a great deal of scrolling to reach the last of the subs. Goal is to had 2 or 3 subs on each line to reduce the overall height.

Your best bet would probably be to use a separate product type for the third category of products, then you can have a separate menu system to modify without affecting the normal one. See the Document product type menu for example of 2 menu boxes. Note that you can style the section to make it appear to be all one section.
