Hi All,
I've installed MAMP & Zen-Cart on my home computer.
Everything seems to work.
Is it possible to download a site created with Zen Cart locally to use for testing?

answering my own question:
can I follow the instructions posted by humbll in a previous thread?
1. Do a Zencart fresh install on the new domain
2. Copy old store to new domain, overwriting all files except the 2 configure.php files in /includes and /admin/includes
3. Overwrite the new database with the backup copy I made from the old store.
4. Modify .htaccess file in the root with a redirect like so:
Forget step 4. That's just so that search engines can follow along when your move a live store - not relevant to your case.

Can I backup the sql database from the Zen Cart Admin area?
Is this necessary if I'm only working on the design of the template?

If you have the backup mysql plugin mod installed and working in both your environments. It doesn't work in all environments.

Kuroi in the download section is says the following:
Backup your MySQL database from within Zen Cart....fast and easy.
NOTE: uses exec() function calls to run mysqldump and mysql binaries. Sometimes exec() is restricted from use in shared-hosting environments. Also, doesn't work in safe mode or on servers where the mysqldump or mysql binaries have restricted access.
Question: If the website is a dedicated IP does this overide a shared-hosting environment?

I don't claim any particular expertise in this area, but my expectation would be that having a dedicated IP address, e.g. for SSL, would not have any impact on whether a host has restricted use of exec().
