customizing and removing product from home page

This is my first attempt to use zen cart and I'm struggling. I have a one product store. I do not want that product on the home page, but I can't get it to go away. I turned off most everything in the config/index listing page. I noticed that the url will not stick on index.php. It gets redirected to index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1. Why is that? Could that be the problem?

Once I get the product to go away, how do I put the content I want in there? Is there a template somewhere? I suppose I could make an html file and then call it with an include. Would that be in tpl_index_default.php

You need to turn off in the Configuration ... Layout Settings ...

Skip 1-prod Categories
Skip single-product categories
If this option is set to True, then if the customer clicks on a link to a category which only contains a single item, then Zen Cart will take them directly to that product-page, rather than present them with another link to click in order to see the product.
Default: True
