Shopping cart and checkout problem

Hello,
This is my first interaction with zencart and so far, I think its awesome. I am trying to get this website finished and I am running into some problems.

First problem:
Whenever anything is added to the cart a mysterious other item is also added. The other item has no name or quantity. I don't know what that is and don't want it there.

Second problem:
The products are not making it to the step 2 of 3 page. They do not show up in the subtotal. I don't know why that would happen.

Update...
I fixed the "two item in shopping cart" problem. It had something to do with displaying attributes. Now I still have the problem of not being able to purchase anything except shipping. If I figure it out I will post how I did it but if anyone can give me some clues, its much appreciated.

What Shipping and Payment modules are you using?

What Shipping Modules display on checkout_shipping?

Do you have Zones set on the Shipping or Payment modules?

I have the almost the same problem, when you go through the buying process it will not let you pass onto stage 2 choose payment method. When you click on the link it just returns the same page.
The shop has been working but seems to have a hiccup
Payment module is credit card.
Shipping is free.
No zones.
Please can you give some guidance as it's a real problem

It will not let you past the next stage to step 2 it refreshes the existing page it was tested recently and worked fine. Not too sure how long the problem has been. The shop is live

You have no Shipping Modules installed ...

Go to Modules ... Shipping ...

Are any installed?

Do they have the green dot?

What version of Zen Cart is showing on the Tools ... Server Info ... this would be all the information from below the menu bar up to and including the large PHP Version X.XXX ...

Is this a clean install or an upgrade?

I need to get back I think we have decided to re-install the latest version. So all hell has broken loose at he moment.

It was a clean install and worked fine we have not upgraded but might well install new version and start again.

Thanks so much for the help it looks like we have it working.

The only shipping we had enabled was FREE SHIPPING I have now enabled Flat shipping and set it 0.00 cost It appears to be working.
