Admin> Configuration> Layout Settings> Categories Tabs - disable them

Sorry Kim I misspoke I wanted to get rid of the catagory heading on the main page. Tried the catagory_row and removing the catagory_name in

$categories->fields['categories_image'], $categories->fields[''],

but no luck

Does help when you are quite specific about requirements..

Find .categoryIcon in your stylesheet, and add display:none;
