The .htaccess files are a critical part of site security. Don't just rename them without having a clear understanding of the risks involved. If your host won't let you have .htaccess files, you may want to consider moving to a better host. (I understand windows doesn't allow .htaccess files at all - one reason not to use a windows server.)
