Weights and shipping using mixed measurements

How does zencart calculate the weight when there are items of mixed measurement?
I have items that can range from just a couple of ounces to 50 lbs.
Should I be doing something special on the items themselves in order to make sure the weight calculations are correct?
I would like to use the USPS shipping module and I see that it expects items in pounds and ounces.

All weight is entered as lbs ...

While this is a unit of measure, the Shipping Modules that come with Zen Cart like UPS and USPS require lbs ...

For ounces use the decimal equivalent:
1 ounce = 0.0625 pounds
