You will download the whole package. In the installation process, there is an option to install the demo products; do this, because they include a LOT of useful information about using Zen Cart.

Once you have learned how to use ZC, you can reinstall a fresh copy and start your real store with a clean slate.

I used Fantastico offered with my hosting server and it does not give you the option to install the demo. Is there anyway to turn it on?
