Protect images directory

Hello! I hope someone can help me! I did the exact same thing... following that security article. Now my images are not showing up at all, nor can I access the images folder to set the permissions back! I get an error message saying:

"Fetch could not open the folder 'images' because the FTP server says that the requested item was not a folder or could not be accessed. If you entered a folder name or URL, check that it is correct. Server responded: 'images: No such file or directory'."

I did set the permissions to 644, so I should still be able to read and write to that folder, right?!

Please tell me I have not completely messed myself up!

It looks like you may have put your store images in the wrong place...

This is where you have stored your home page image:

If you click on this you will see your image...

Note: It is using the ROOT OF YOUR STORE template.

However, here is where it is looking for your product images:

<img src="images/categories/IMG_93481-dual.jpg"
http://www.chacha-vintage.com/images...93841-dual.jpg

This is pointing to your root images/categories folder - and I do not think that is correct. If you click on this you will get a 404 error - file not found...

Where is your images folder located?

Hi jund! Thanks for your response. My product images are all stored in www.chacha-vintage.com/images, with respective "medium" and "large" folders. There is a subfolder in there where I keep my category images.

However, I am now unable to access the folder at all since I've changed the permissions to 644. (Everything was working perfectly fine before.) And they don't show up on my site. I've set my site to "down for maintenance" until I can get this fixed because my site is useless without pictures!

I can recreate the images folder if I really have to, but it would be much easier if I can just reset the permissions!

Any thoughts??

I am still not clear on your settings... do you have the images folder set for 644? If so, set it for 755. It will not hurt anything.

Do you have your images set for 644? If so, you usually can leave them set for 644.

SUMMARY - The proper way to set up you images folder and files is images folder = 755 and contents (image files) = 644.

I hope you do not think I talking down to you... the directions are really not clear about this in some places... plus, I do not know what kind of server you are using... if you are using a Windows server, things are a bit different. Also, what are you using to change the permissions (your FTP app, your web manager, your site's CP or what?).

Jund, believe me, feel free to make things as clear as you need to! I need all the help I can get!

So, what I did was change the permissions on the images folder to 644. I did not do anything to the images themselves.

The way I changed the permissions was using Fetch. I am on a Mac. I went to "Get Info" for the folder and then set the permissions.

The problem is now I know I need to set the permissions on that folder back in order to get my images back! HOWEVER, when I go to access that folder (Get Info, open the folder, anything...), I get the error message from my previous post saying I can't access the folder or that it doesn't exist.

So that is my problem -> changing the permissions back.

I was hoping there was some kind of workaround, some admin back way in or something. I don't understand why if I supposedly have read/write access to that folder using 644, I can't access it.

I have contacted my hosting company to see whether *they* can just reset the permissions on that folder for me.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to try to help me, and any thoughts you have are much appreciated!
