    Default popup for some users

I have a client who wants to display a popup only to users who are browsing and decide to not make a purchase. It would basically work like this:

I'm a shopper who is browsing, and may or may not add items to my cart. If I don't purchase and try navigating away from the store, I'm prompted with a popup window that says, "Last chance! Purchase using Promo Code LASTCHANCE, and get 10% off your order. Are you sure you want to leave?". If I click YES I continue on, if I click NO, I stay and can make my purchase.

I know what you're thinking and I agree this will get real old real fast. However, this is what they want and I need to figure a way to do it. Any help would be appreciated. I am also aware that there is an Abandoned Cart Recovery Mod, but I need to try to save the sale before they leave.

Another issue is that we're using the PayPal module. So technically, even paying customers will at some point leave the site and possible get hit with the pop up.

    Thanks again.

Use Javascript to create an OnUnload event.. Make it check the exit URL to match Paypal's URL.. If it doesn't then load the pop up.

However it won't work if they just flat out close the browser.. IE7 has it disabled so people don't get flooded with popups.

What your client is saying very plainly is that I, as a potential customer, can not have a legitimate reason for leaving, whether or not I intend to come back later, and that therefore they are going to stick their face into my browsing habits and whine at me as I leave.

Guess how likely I am to come back -- ever?!?

As you say, you have to try to give them what they want. But perhaps what they need is some advice.

You couldn't be anymore right rstevenson.. Perhaps instead of telling him how to do it I should have gave him some advice.. I work for a Development Firm that specializes in development of all aspects.. We work for both low budget companies to high budget corporations developing web interfaces, intranet interfaces, etc.. If I was in your position where a client requested this type of service to his account. I would plainly explain to him that this will not increase his revenue, nor give a potential customer the desire to return. To me it appears he's read too many self-help books on the ideas of gaining customers. Popups on exit is not an idea nor a potential money growth.. It's an annoyance that is becoming more and more destroyed with every passing minute with Web Browsers.. I would invest more time/energy into product marketing, website marketing, ad campaigns if he is wanting to increase revenue..
