Categories side box to always show sub categories

is there a way to have the Categories side box always displaying the sub categories, disabling the drop down menu functionality?

I've been trying to figure this one out too. I want the sidebox to always show the subcategories, and I've been playing with the 'tpl_categories.php' file, but can't seem to get it to work. I thought I could find some way to get it to reveal the subcategories, even if the category isn't 'current'. Any idea? I don't think this is something you can do in the Admin, but where in the code can I affect this?

I could swear I saw something in the admin>configuration>layout settings

that said something about always show subcategories. eh?

There are mods available to do this.

Expanded Category List (in Downloads) will always show all categories, subcats and products.

Category Listing Box (in Downloads) is supposed to display all categories and subcats.

Uncollapsed Categories Tree (mod by fragfutter hosted on his site) shows all categories and subcats.
